Coni's research study surveyed over 100 C-level leaders. She found that by generalizing “introvert” and “extrovert” the wrong signals are being sent to aspiring leaders, recruiters, and organizational development professionals. To truly predict which leaders are likely to be top performers, recruitment, selection, and development practices need to look beyond the personality trait labels of ‘introvert’ and ‘extrovert’ to understand the aspects of communalism and assertiveness. Extroversion/Introversion and its aspects are heritable, neurologically hard-wired, and stable. As a coach and educator, Coni supports leaders in being themselves and understanding the upsides and downsides of the aspects of being an introvert or an extrovert Asking leaders to ‘act extroverted’ to fit an ideal leads to physical and motivational problems.Favoring extroverts as leaders is a form of bias and counter to the benefits of promoting diversity and inclusion in thinking as well as demographics. Healthy and high performing teams include all types of personalities and so promotion policies, training programs, and work environments should reflect difference and support individual needs.
